olan is white and mild curry with flavours of coconut milk.

  • 1 cup Ash gourd (kumbalanga)
  • 1 cup Yellow pumpkin (Mathanga )
  • 3-4 slit Green chilli
  • 3/4 cup Thin coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup Thick coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup Black eyed peas/vanpayar
  • salt needed
  • 3 tsp coconut oil
  • curry leaves few


  1. Take some black eyed peas and soak it with a little salt overnight.

  2. After pressure cook it for 2 whistles.kep it in a side.

  3.  peel and chop ash gourd and pumpkin into a medium sized pieces.

  4. extract coconut milk or use packed coconut milk

  5. if using packed coconut milk first dilute it with water for thin coconut milk.

  6. Now pumpkin and ash gourd cooked with slit green chillies.

  7.  a little amount of salt needed in thin coconut milk.

  8. once its cooked add thick coconut milk and cooked cow peas (vanpayar).

  9. cook over low flame 5-6 minutes.after all switch off heat.

  10. for decoration and spicy taste add some curry leaves and drizzle raw coconut oil on the top.

Recipe Notes

If you want a slightly thick Olan, then add only 1/4 cup thick, 1 st coconut milk.
