  • 2 nos Ripe tomato
  • Tamarind medium gooseberry size
  • 1/4 tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder/Dhania powder
  • 1/8 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt & water as needed

To grind

  • 3 nos Small onion Big onion (1/2 no)
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper corns
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 3 nos Garlic cloves

To temper

  • 1 tbsp Coconut oil or ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 no Red chilli ( Pinched)
  • 1 no Green chilli ( slit)
  • Curry leaves few
  • Coriander leaves to garnish


  1. First thing you have to do is soak tamarind in 1 cup of water for 20 minutes.

  2. Take the extract.Chop tomato into small pieces. 

  3. Grind onion, pepper corns, cumin seeds,garlic coarsely without adding water. Set aside.

  4. Heat oil or ghee in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds,red chilli, curry leaves and green chilli.Saute for few seconds. 

  5. Now add the coarsely ground paste. Saute for a minute.

  6. Later add some salt, chopped tomato, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and dhania powder.

  7.  Saute well till tomato turns mushy .Add the tamarind extract.

  8. Boil well for 2-3 minutes till rasam becomes frothy. 
  9. Add chopped coriander leaves and give one boil, switch off the flame. 
  10. Transfer to a vessel and cover it with a lid.
  11. Let it rest for 15 minutes before serving.

  12. It helps for all the flavor to blend well. Serve with hot rice and papapdam.
